The Top 10 European Cities to Relocate to in 2024 to Lead a Fulfilling Life

Roughly 90% of EU citizens are content with their lives in their particular cities, according to the EU 2023 Report on Quality of Life in European Cities. According to the report, the top ten cities where citizens express high levels of satisfaction are dominated by Switzerland and Denmark.

Although there has been a minor decline in overall happiness across EU cities as compared to 2019, the survey highlights that nine out of 10 people are still very satisfied. When asked if their quality of life had changed in the previous five years, the majority of respondents—including those from the EU—said that it had not. In particular, 31% reported improvement, 40% said there had been no change, and about 29% saw a drop.

The research indicates that people view smaller cities as superior locations to live in a number of categories, such as safety, the availability of public spaces, healthcare, the cost of housing, and local governmental administrations. Migrants, families with small children, and the elderly are also said to favor smaller cities.

As per the research, the following ten cities have the highest levels of resident satisfaction:

1. Switzerland’s Zurich (97%).
2. Copenhagen, Denmark, accounting for 96%
3. Groningen (96 percent) in the Netherlands
4. 95% of Gdansk, Poland,
5. 95% of Leipzig, Germany
6. 95% of Stockholm, Sweden
7. Switzerland’s Geneva, Switzerland (95%)
8. Rostock, Denmark, accounting for 94%
9. Romania’s Cluj-Napoca (94 percent)
10. Portugal’s Braga (94%).

Three more cities ranked in the top 10 for immigration are Groningen, Braga, and Gdansk.
Cardiff (UK), Lisbon (Portugal), Barcelona (Spain), Tyneside (UK), Hamburg (Germany), Helsinki (Finland), and Glasgow (UK) are some other cities that have been identified as the best locations for immigrants.

On the other hand, the cities that have the lowest resident satisfaction with their city are Rome (Italy), Skopje (North Macedonia), Miskolc (Hungary), Istanbul (Turkey), Naples (Italy), Belgrade (Serbia), Palermo (Italy), and Podgorica (Montenegro).

83 cities in the European Union, the Western Balkans, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) are included in the report. Based on 71,153 interviews conducted between January and April of this year in each city, a sample of at least 839 residents was questioned. The 2020 survey also showed that Europeans, particularly those living in smaller cities, were highly satisfied with their city lives.
