Hotels in Paris Will Triple Prices for the 2024 Olympics, a Study Indicates
According to a recent survey conducted by the consumer advocacy group UFC-Que Choisir, hotels in Paris are raising their rates significantly; on the opening night of the 2024 Olympic Games, the average cost is expected to surpass €1,000. The report predicts that the average cost of a double room on July 26, the day of the Olympic opening ceremony, will be €1,033, based on a poll conducted in late December among 80 three- and four-star hotels. When compared to the average of €317 that was noted on the evening of July 12 two weeks prior, this is a notable increase.
According to Reuters, of the hotels that were questioned, half said they were completely booked for that particular night, 30% demanded a minimum reservation of two nights, and some hotels even requested a commitment for up to five nights. According to UFC, the average minimum stay required was 3.4 days, and the average nightly rate was €867.
According to the report, a three-star hotel raised the cost of a double room to €2,083 from €304 two weeks prior. One four-star hotel additionally demanded a minimum reservation of four nights at a cost of €2,095 per night.
There is a huge demand for lodging, especially hotels, for the Olympics and Paralympics, with the Paris tourism bureau predicting roughly 16 million visitors in the greater Paris area. Airbnb has encouraged Parisians to rent out their houses during the games in order to assist offset costs in reaction to the soaring rates.
The research states that a large number of migrants, asylum seekers, and Roma squatting in empty buildings have been forced to leave the Seine-Saint-Denis area north of Paris, where the Olympic Village is under development, aggravating the city’s homelessness problem.
Separately, France is going to be the first nation in the EU to introduce entirely online French Schengen Visa application processes. With this action, the application process for visas for about 70,000 attendees of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games—including foreign delegations, media, and international athletes—will be streamlined. Introduced in January, the new “Olympic Consulate” system aims to avoid application confusion due to the large number of files processed at French visa facilities across the globe.
