When compared to the 25.57 million passengers in 2019, the overall number of passengers in 2023 increased to 28,174,150. Data released on Thursday showed that, with 22,728,668 people traveling through the airport that year, these statistics above 2022 levels by 24 percent and surpassed 2019 levels by 10.2 percent, according to Greek Travel Pages.

Domestic and international traveler numbers in 2023 surpassed 2022 levels by 18.9% and 26.4 percent, respectively, and pre-pandemic levels by 13.3% and 8.8%, respectively. November was a record-breaking month for Athens Airport, breaking its own record set in 2019. The airport saw consistent monthly gains in passenger volume. When compared to the same month last year, AIA’s passenger traffic increased significantly in October, according to a report by the Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe).

1.86 million people used the airport in December alone, a 17.1% increase from December 2022 and a 13.6 percent increase from statistics for December 2019. Notably, the number of passengers traveling within the country and outside the country increased by 11.9 percent and 19.4 percent, respectively, over 2022 levels and by 20.8 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively, over 2019 statistics.

241,604 flights were recorded at Athens International Airport last year, up 7.1 percent from pre-pandemic levels and 13.2 percent from 2022. In comparison to 2022, there was a rise in both domestic and foreign travel, with growth rates of 7.4% and 18.1%, respectively. There was a 4.6 percent rise in foreign flights and an increase of 10.5 percent in domestic flights when compared to 2019.

After suffering setbacks due to COVID-19 regulations, the Greek tourism industry showed signs of recovery in the first ten months of the previous year, according to the Bank of Greece (BG). According to central bank data, travel receipts in 2019 were outpaced by tourism receipts from January to October. According to Greek Travel Pages (GTP), total travel income from January to October 2023 was €19.6 billion, a significant rise of 14.7 percent over the same period in 2022.
