Japan is encouraging travelers to explore beyond its famous cities this autumn with the introduction of the Aki no Norihodai Pass, a limited-time rail pass offering three consecutive days of unlimited travel on Japan Railways (JR) regular and rapid train services.
Designed for both domestic and international travelers, the new pass aims to make regional travel more affordable while encouraging visitors to discover Japan’s lesser-known towns, rural landscapes, and authentic cultural experiences.
Unlike many regional rail passes, the Aki no Norihodai Pass provides nationwide access to JR regular and rapid services without regional restrictions, giving travelers greater flexibility to create multi-destination itineraries across the country.
Affordable Way to Explore Japan
The pass is priced at:
- Adults: 7,850 yen (approximately US$49)
- Children: 3,920 yen
In addition to unlimited train travel, the pass also includes unlimited rides on JR-operated BRT highway bus services, offering easier access to destinations beyond the railway network.
However, the pass does not cover Shinkansen bullet trains, limited express trains, or express services, instead encouraging travelers to experience Japan through its extensive local rail network.
Supporting Slow Travel and Regional Tourism
The initiative reflects Japan’s growing focus on regional tourism and slow travel, encouraging visitors to spend more time exploring local communities rather than concentrating solely on popular destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
Local railway routes provide access to historic towns, mountain regions, coastal landscapes, and countryside communities that are often overlooked by traditional travel itineraries.
With autumn bringing vibrant red and golden foliage across much of Japan, the season offers ideal conditions for scenic rail journeys and photography.
Optional Hokkaido Extension
Travelers heading to northern Japan can also purchase a Hokkaido Shinkansen Option Ticket, priced at:
- Adults: 4,650 yen
- Children: 2,320 yen
The option includes one journey between Shin-Aomori Station and Kikonai Station on the Hokkaido Shinkansen, along with one ride on the Donan Isaribi Tetsudo Line, allowing travelers to continue exploring Hokkaido through JR services.
Availability
The Aki no Norihodai Pass will be available for purchase from 18 September to 16 October 2026 at major JR stations, JR travel centers, and authorized travel agencies.
The pass can be used for three consecutive days during the travel period from 3 October to 18 October 2026.
By promoting affordable local rail travel, Japan aims to encourage visitors to venture beyond its busiest tourist hubs while supporting regional tourism and showcasing the country’s diverse landscapes during one of its most picturesque seasons.
