The European Commission has proposed some new measures to strengthen Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, to improve the protection of the EU’s external borders and enhance migration management across the Schengen Area.
Commission Expands Frontex’s Role
The proposal focuses on three key priorities:
- Increase operational capacity by gradually expanding Frontex’s standing corps to 30,000 officers and providing faster access to advanced equipment and technology.
- Strengthen return operations by establishing a Return Coordination Centre to coordinate EU-wide returns more efficiently and support return operations in partner countries.
- It has improved the crisis response by creating an Online Monitoring and Response Center to detect emerging risks, improve information sharing, and deploy a Quick Reaction Force during emergencies.
EU Plans to Digitalize Return Procedures
The Commission also proposes to digitalize return, readmission, and reintegration procedures across the EU. The initiative will:
- Simplify and modernize return management.
- Reduce administrative burdens.
- Improve data collection and information sharing.
- Support the development of a common EU digital system for return procedures, with Frontex playing a central role.
What Happens Next?
The proposal now moves to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union for negotiation and approval.
The initiative supports the EU’s broader goals of strengthening the Schengen Area, improving migration and asylum management, and enhancing European security. It also delivers on commitments outlined in the 2024–2029 Political Guidelines. That is reaffirmed by the Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her 2026 State of the Union Address.
